TAJIKISTAN
Worth crossing the border for.
From Samarkand, Tajikistan is surprisingly easy to add to an Uzbekistan trip.
Panjakent is just across the border, and from there you can be in the mountains and around the Seven Lakes without committing to a long or complicated journey.
Four or five days works well. Stay longer if you want to walk more or head further into the country.
A GOOD FIRST ROUTE
Samarkand → Panjakent → Seven Lakes → Dushanbe
This is the route I’d start with.
Cross from Samarkand, spend some time around Panjakent, then head into the Seven Lakes before continuing to Dushanbe.
It gives you history, mountain scenery and a couple of very different towns without trying to fit too much in.
PANJAKENT
A useful place to stop.
Panjakent is often treated as somewhere to pass through on the way to the mountains.
I’d give it a bit of time.
There are archaeological sites, a good museum and enough going on in town to make it worth staying rather than rushing straight through.
THE SEVEN LAKES
Take your time here.
The Seven Lakes are the main reason I’d add Tajikistan to an Uzbekistan trip.
You can drive much of the valley, walk sections of it, stop in villages and stay overnight if you want to slow things down.
You don’t have to see every lake. I’d rather spend more time in the places that are working for you than turn the day into a race to the end of the valley.
Accommodation in the mountains are simple guesthouses.
DUSHANBE
A dramatic drive and a comfortable finish.
A stunning drive through the Tajik Mountains takes you to Dushanbe, a surprising modern city.
It’s spacious, easy to get around and has good restaurants and hotels.
I wouldn’t overload the itinerary here. A night or two is usually enough unless there’s something in particular you want to see.

Beyond the North
Tajikistan can be a short addition to Uzbekistan, or it can become a much bigger trip.
If you want to explore the Pamir Highway, have more walking, more time in villages or to go further into the mountains, we can build around that.

Uzbekistan and Tajikistan work well together because they feel different.
Uzbekistan gives you the cities. Tajikistan gives you a few days in the mountains.
You don’t need a long Tajikistan itinerary for it to change the feel of the whole trip.
